Earlier this year, I read the first book in the series, Ecosystem, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Devouring Land picks ups on the day of Isaac and Miriam’s wedding when their village is overrun by monsters from the Ecosystem. With the village leaders dead and few remaining Sensors, it’s up to Sarah to guide the surviving villagers into the heart of the Ecosystem. With her badly damaged Sense, Sarah must face new threats and dangers, things no one has ever encountered before, in the hopes of finding her mothers birthplace. When another surprise attack decimates the already dwindling number of survivors, those who are left are rescued by a group of people under the leadership of a man named Gabriel. Sarah and the remaining villagers are taken to a sheltered city ruled by healer-women known as queens. It’s here that Sarah uncovers the origins of the Ecosystem and a new way to co-exist with it. But the City of Queens has a dark past, and Sarah must learn the truth about her lineage in order to protect the ones she loves, and the world she knows.

When I read Ecosystem earlier this year, I adored the creative and thrilling post-apocalyptic world Joshua David Bellin had created, and in The Devouring Land, we delve even further into its origins and how it works, and I especially loved the incorporation of queens. It’s very rare I find a post-apocalyptic world that is so refreshing, intriguing, well-built and full of surprises, and if anyone loves immersive settings, this series should definitely be on your radar.

Sarah, as with the first book, was an absolute delight. She is such an amazingly complex protagonist, and to watch her growth was such a pleasure. She’s capable, intelligent, and I totally dig this ‘reluctant hero’ thing. We also have some new characters, too, who were equally as enjoyable — I especially loved both Leah and Angelica, and I can’t wait to see more of them in the next book (and I better!).

This is a series I am so happy exists and it is one I am already eagerly anticipating the next book! It’s suspenseful and action-packed and devotes equal time to making sure the world is immersive but also that the characters are fully fleshed out. And I adore Sarah! I know I’ve said it before, but I love her so much!

If you’re a fan of post-apocalyptic and environmental literature, and books with a complex and flawed female protagonist, then this is the series for you!
