This is Where it Ends is a novel about a school shooting – a tragic event that happens often in the USA. It is a powerful, harrowing and haunting novel about the effect a shooting like this one has on an entire community. It’s told from four different perspectives in 54 minutes.

This is Where it Ends is not an easy novel to read, it is dark and disturbing. Some reviews have mentioned that they wanted more depth to Tyler and more understanding. However, this novel focuses very much on the victims of the shooting, rather than the actual culprit – unlike what happens in the media. When an event like this happens, the media try to get into the mind of the shooter and figure out why they did it, with little focus on the actual victims of the crime.

The four different pov’s did make this a difficult read for me sometimes, because it would flick from one to the other really fast. And at the beginning of the novel, when I didn’t really know the characters very well, I had to go back to the beginning of the chapter to figure out whose pov I was reading. But the more the characters developed, the more I could distinguish between them. But due to the nature of the book, and it being told over 54 minutes, I think the author has done a really good job.

Overall, this is a book that it going to be talked a lot about – perhaps controversially so. But it is a dark novel, with a diverse cast, that is not perfect but it is a good debut novel.

MY RATING: ★★★★☆
