A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness (Review)

Stories are wild creatures, the monster said. When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?

Conor is a young boy who is being haunted by nightmares. One night he wakes up at 12:07 to find a monster outside his bedroom window. He says he wants to tell Conor three stories and then hear the truth from him. The truth that has haunted him ever since his mother started her treatments.

A Monster Calls was such a heartbreaking read. Cancer is a horrible disease which effects everyone in a person’s life. Conor is just a boy when his mum is diagnosed and that must be really hard on him. He is angry and scared and he feels invisible to everyone ever since. At only 237 pages, Patrick Ness really does manage to break our heart and this book really does pack a punch. He deals so well with loss, death and grief and makes it so easy to connect with every single character on the pages. Patrick Ness really does put so much emotion in every single word and it is such a meaningful book which really does affect me.

I really enjoyed the monsters story and how he is slowly teaching Conor so many life lessons. He is there to help Conor deal with his grief. That it is OK to cause destruction. There is no bad and good.

Such a truly heartbreaking read that I highly suggest reading.
